Although not many of us can keep our eyes off jaw-dropping jewelry or gorgeous gemstones, a few of us might be lucky enough to spend some money on them. There are a few things to keep in mind before investing in gems, however. Emeralds, sapphires, diamonds, rubies and other stones are in constant demand and, unlike metals like gold, will hold on to their value — but make sure you consider the following when investing in gems:

#1 Consult the Pros
No matter how much you think you know your gems, you will want to get independent lab certifications from a recognized gem lab to make sure that you’re getting the real thing — and spending your money wisely. Do your own research on stones, labs and where to buy, because fraudulent sellers are out there. You want to choose a well established, trusted seller or vendor — one that you can ask about and research their credentials.

#2 Go Rare
If you can afford it, choose rare or unique gemstones in which to invest — and invest in high quality. Ask about carats, color, clarity. When it comes to investments and price, precious stones — emeralds, rubies, diamonds and sapphires — trump semi-precious stones like amethyst and turquoise, making for a better investment.

#3 Temper Expectations
Don’t expect to magically quadruple your investment. Typically, your return on a gemstone will mirror the rate of inflation, unless you invest in a gem with a unique history or ownership, or if other circumstances, such as mine depletion, make your stone more rare. You’ll need to find the best deal out there — think below-retail pricing — to get a good return on your investment.

#4 Consider Option B
If the task of learning about gemstones and finding the right vendor seems ominous, consider the alternative: buying stock in an industry-specific company. There are quite a few mining companies around the world that are investment-worthy.
